Welcome to the AP Capstone Presentation Symposium 2021, where we are sharing some of the research completed by our AP Capstone students this year. AP Capstone™ is a diploma program from the College Board. It’s based on two yearlong AP courses: AP Seminar and AP Research.
Rather than teaching subject-specific content, these courses develop students’ skills in research, analysis, evidence-based arguments, collaboration, writing, and presenting. Students who complete the two-year program can earn one of two different AP Capstone awards, which are valued by colleges across the United States and around the world.
Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research and on four additional AP Exams of their choosing receive the AP Capstone Diploma™.
Students who earn scores of 3 or higher in AP Seminar and AP Research but not on four additional AP Exams receive the AP Seminar and Research Certificate™.
AP Seminar Presentations
In AP Seminar, students spend time developing and practicing a variety of research and presentational skills. They are then evaluated on these skills in the form of through-course assessments: Performances Tasks 1 and 2. Both tasks require a written and presentation component. Shared in this symposium is the Individual Multimedia Presentation, which is presentation component of Performance Task 2. This task asks students to identify a research question prompted by analysis of stimulus materials provided by the College Board. Once they have identified a question, students then gather information from a range of additional sources to develop, refine, and compose an argument and presentation. After their presentations were complete, students were asked to recreate their live presentations in video form to share with this virtual symposium.

AP Research Presentations
Over the course of the year, students in AP Research identify a research question on a topic of their choice and design a research study to answer that
question. They write a 4000-5000 word Academic Paper that includes a review of the current scholarly discourse on their topic, a description of their chosen method, and their findings and conclusions. They also must present and defend their findings to a panel of faculty and/or administrators. After their presentations were complete, students were asked to recreate their live presentations in video form to share with this virtual symposium.
